So we knew they were coming but we had no idea we would so enjoy being part of a large party of neighbours from Holts Field. Twelve plus us ! Mark, Fern, Daisy, Perin, Alex, Camilla, Ceri, Alister, Anna, Ami, Bodie and Kate.
We found them all sitting on the infamous Anchor Point, watching Mark take on large world class waves. I surfed here myself in the 70's and have not been back here since. Mark's influence would mean I would surf it again but more on that later.
Anchor Point draws people from all around the world. You also have to be fit ! As the above photo shows, Mark did well. There were a lot of very good athletes in the water so waves were scarce. But he caught waves to be proud of, with a large team of supporters to watch.
So we tag along and see what happens. I'll try to convey the week that followed, as it happened but I might get details mixed and I might just flower it up a bit because it did turn out to be an extraordinary week. We parked on the main road outside the Surf Maroc hotel and nestled into the spare double bed that Mark and Fern had in their apartment.
A gang of twelve plus two gate crashers means people have to do their own thing. We leaned towards the surfing side so spent more time with Mark than others. They had their own wonderful experiences of Taghazoute and Morocco. We became Team Mark Jones and supported his efforts to take on the ocean.

This day, I was happy to take photos and watch. Just to be with this loving family was more than enough. Fern, Daisy, Perin and Bodie. Krysia and I. We all walked with Mark to 'the point' to cheer our champion. And what waves. Brilliant to watch but a bit nerve wracking to think I could be in there too. So I let go of that and got on with the photography. Mark waved at regular intervals to let us know where he was as there were many in the water.

Nice waves Mark. We were proud to be your team.
I must admit, I was tempted to give it a try. Mark would like it too. Perhaps another day ? Cmon Ted, you can do it, he says. Yeah, but it's been nearly 40 years since I last surfed Anchor Point. Caswell doesn't really give much training for here. Even Imsouane is not quite as daunting as this. And I am 61 now ! Excuses, excuses. But before I get into my own tale of taking the plunge, we have a day out to Paradise Valley to enjoy. All 14 of us. So I'll post this blog and give one over to the day the Welsh went to Paradise !!!
